HOUSING & CONSTRUCTION AWARDS PHOTOGRAPHY
As part of your Housing & Construction Awards submission, you can choose to submit professional photographs. If you do not submit professional shots, the judges will take their own photographs as they judge your entry.
These photographs remain the property of Master Builders and will be used for all publicity and audio visual requirements for the Awards program and will form part of Master Builders' photography library, for use in all of our publications.
Why use a professional photographer?
There are some distinct advantages of commissioning a professional photographer to take photographs of your entry.
- Your project will be presented in the best light possible and you will have control over the images taken.
- Professional photographs are of the highest standard and can highlight special features of your project.
- You can use the professional photographs taken in your own publicity material like brochures, flyers and websites.
Photography requirements
If you do choose to do so, the supplied professional photos must meet some requirements:
- Supplied at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
- A variety of shots should be supplied, including:
- Housing - external (front entry, landscaping and any outdoor areas like pools, patios and decks) and internal (kitchen, bathrooms, living areas, media rooms), plus photos of any main features of the home. E.g. balustrading, timber or steel work, etc.
- Commercial - external and internal shots highlighting main features of the project.
COPYRIGHT
Giving Master Builders permission to use your photographs
When you sign your entry form and submit your entry, you are giving Master Builders the right to use both supplied professional photographs and any photographs taken by our judges, in any of our publications, in any context.
Therefore, it is imperative that you ensure you are the owner of copyright for commissioned photographs OR that you have the photographer's permission for yourself and Master Builders to use the photos in any of their publications (and explain thoroughly what this means to them).
Copyright and Photograph Release form
If supplying Master Builders with professional photographs, you must complete and supply the Copyright and Photograph Release form to prove that permission has been granted by the photographer to use the photographs as part of the Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards process - including publishing photos in magazines, newspapers and other media outlets, as well as in any audio visual presentation or promotional campaign.

Who owns copyright in commissioned photographs?
When commissioning commercial photographs, the Australian Copyright Council states that if photos 'were taken for any other purpose (e.g. commercial shots), the photographer will be the first owner of copyright, unless the photographer and client agree otherwise'.
Ensuring you own copyright
When finalising a contractual arrangement with a photographer, ensure your contract/agreement states (in writing) that on payment of the photographer's invoice, copyright ownership is transferred to you.
