Building standards for bushfire prone areas

From 1 October 2009 Queensland adopted the new revised Australian Standard AS 3959-2009 Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.

All building applications for Class 1, 2, 3 and associated Class 10a buildings in a local government designated bushfire area will need to be designed and built in accordance with the new standard.

This will apply to building applications made after 1 October 2009.

Copies of the Standard can be obtained from http://infostore.saiglobal.com/store/

As of 1 October, Timber Queensland's Technical Data Sheet 24 will no longer be current as it does not address the requirements of AS 3959 - 2009. This data sheet will be revised or alternatively, new data sheets being developed on a national timber industry basis, will be made available.

In the meantime, the information prepared by our Victorian cousins for Timber Framed Housing Bushfire Areas can be used as a guide for compliance with AS 3959 - 2009. Click here to view this documentation or visit www.timber.org.au.
